INTENDED AUDIENCE

This conference has been designed for practicing general and oncology surgeons and other surgical health professionals in evaluating standards of care and new techniques and interventions for surgical conditions of colorectal, breast and endocrine cancer and other topics in surgery.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

For 25 years, Controversies, Problems, and Techniques in Surgery has provided its audience a medium where they can hear expert opinions on what constitues best-practices in surgical techniques and patient care. We are pleased that year-to-year, attendees inform us that they have taken away information from the meeting, which has helped them to implement changes in their practices and positively effect their patient outcomes. This year's meeting will focus on the surgeon's role in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of cancers seen in clinical practice.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING GAP

Implement best surgical practices in diagnosis and treatment of breast, colorectal, and endocrine cancers.

ACTIVITY GOAL

The goal of this activity is to help the practicing surgeon analyze new therapies/techniques/diagnostic interventions in the context of current standards of care as they relate to colorectal, breast and endocrine diseases and other aspects of general surgery.

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this conference the participants should be able to:

  • Summarize and describe the nature of multidisciplinary therapy for rectal cancer and be able to develop a treatment plan after consideration of findings following preoperative chemo radiation.
  • Define the time from preoperative chemoradiation therapy to surgery (for rectal cancer) and alternatives to surgical intervention for advanced or recurrent colorectal cancer.
  • Diagnose anal intra-epidermal neoplasia, carcinoma-in-situ of the anus and anal condylomata and understand the relative efficacies of the therapies involved in the treatment of these diseases.
  • Discuss the outcomes and controversies with respect to local and minimally invasive therapy of rectal cancer.
  • Analyze the controversies in the management of breast core biopsy pathology results, surgical margins for breast cancer and nipple discharge.
  • Evaluate the indications and outcomes for conservative management of breast cancer and risk reducing breast surgery.
  • Understand the recent advances in minimally invasive surgery for appendicitis, colon cancer. biliary disease and thyroid/parathyroid disease.
  • Describe the newest paradigms in the management of thyroid cancer, adrenal tumors and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
